Playlist: GOTTA SERVE SOMEBODY!

Before Dylan’s Slow Train Coming, or either side of his Gospel-Christian Rock Music Period, were two albums-works, which often go unrecognized. ‘STREET LEGAL’, which was released in June, 1978, and slightly over four years later: ‘INFIDELS’ was released on the 1st November, 1983.

Dylan exploded into my life, in 1975, with his seminal work – ‘BLOOD ON THE TRACKS’, which was released on the 17th January, 1975, just 11 days after my 17th birthday. His stories, and enchanting folk-rock, flowed effortlessly into my heart, and to this day, I don’t think there is another Dylan album, that has replaced it.

After that Bob Dylan’s albums cast lonely shadows across my path, for the Dylan which had enchanted me with ‘Blood on the Tracks’ in early ’75 … did not reappear until August, 1979 with his slick ‘SLOW TRAIN COMING’ (accompanied by Mark Knopfler of ‘Dire Straits’, on his Fender Stratocaster), followed under a year later with the massive … ‘SAVED’ album, which hit me at around about the same time I discovered ‘MONOLITH’ by KANSAS; out of which blossomed ‘SEEDS OF CHANGE’ by Kerry Livgren, coinciding with a big surprise from the band A M E R I C A, with the solo album by Dan Peek titled ‘ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE’. Though Dylan followed ‘Saved’ with ‘S H O T of L O V E’ in August, 1983, I had already changed horses and was enjoying ‘AUDIO-VISIONS’ by Kansas.

Though I have listened to every new album by Bob Dylan, since ‘INFIDELS’ and there were some amazing songs on Empire Burlesque (June, 1985), Knocked Out Loaded (August, 1986), Down in the Groove (May, 1988), Mercy (September, 1989), Under the Red Sky (September, 1990), Good as I Been to You (October, 1992), World Gone Wrong (October, 1993), but it not until ‘Time Out of Mind (September, 1997)’ , that my interest was reawakened. I missed “Love and Theft” (September, 2001), though like it, a bit. It seems the big gaps between albums, gave Dylan time to weave the magic that had first touched my life in ’75. The release of ‘Modern Times’ in August, 2006, was a most satisfying moment, but I did not fix on Dylan’s buzz until I heard the BBC Broadcasts, of ‘Theme Time Radio Hour’. It was actually quite enchanting to hear the guy who snowed interviewers, the same who was hailed as a prophet doing Radio proud, and waffling on and on about this and the next thing, interspersed with tunes from the archive of his own heart.
Next thing there he was on my back door playing HOPFARM FESTIVAL 2010, …and there was VAN THE MAN, Morrisson!!!!
So what’s Bob up to now? I’ll be sure to let you know, as soon as I can figure out where the road is …
