‘Whatever’s written in your heart, it’s all that matters ….’ sang Gerry Rafferty.
Tonight as I was getting ready to turn in I came upon the following video, in which Christopher Hitchens expressed certain disgust at being evangelized by certain Christians. (Obviously, he responded with his usual charming whit)
Nonetheless, having had my own close shave with the Grim Reaper, I decided to respond to the video in two separate comments:
After I discovered that I might need a heart transplant and lying in my bed in a cold sweat, I was evangelized by an ex-Christian who overheard my diagnosis. He presently set to informing me that Christ was a Myth and that there was no afterlife and that when you die that’s it. Instead of posting a video about how nasty New Atheists can be, I explained to him that I believed in the resurrection of the dead. Praying.
I aught to add in retrospect that I was also approached by what I presume to be a a fundamentalist Christian ward secretary who asked me if I was ready to meet the Lord. I was in a cold sweat already and searched my heart. Eventually, I weakly replied, ‘I have put my faith in Christ’ The next morning the New Atheist was back on my case. What the hell is the world coming to?
Dr AE Wilder-Smith in his video about ‘Why Does God Allow Suffering?’ dealt with this most sensitively. If you have never watched it, do it now. It might change your attitude to those on death’s door.
Back in the mid-eighties I read a book by Dr. AE Wilder-Smith and though I suspect most of his ideas are dated now, near the end he discuss the death-bedside manners. What a truly sensitive presentation – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyjvT2NGt0I – his website http://www.wildersmith.org/curriculum.htm
