Even a Dorothy Sayer’s Society – http://www.sayers.org.uk/

Okay, I’m not that late for the tea party! I’d heard about a book she’d penned many years ago. Pretty subversive, or would that be revolutionary for the times – http://www.thingsmeanalot.com/2010/03/are-women-human-by-dorothy-l-sayers.html

From Letters to JRR Tolkien – ‘Sayers was a good friend of C. S. Lewis and several of the other Inklings. On some occasions, Sayers joined Lewis at meetings of the Socratic Club. Lewis said he read The Man Born to be King every Easter, but he claimed to be unable to appreciate detective stories. J. R. R. Tolkien read some of the Wimsey novels but scorned the later ones, such as Gaudy Night.’ —>

‎’The Man Born to Be King is a radio drama based on the life of Jesus, produced and broadcast by the BBC during the Second World War. It is a play cycle consisting of twelve plays depicting specific periods in Jesus’ life, from the events surrounding his birth to his death and resurrection. It was first broadcast by the BBC Home Service on Sunday evenings, beginning on December 21, 1941, with new episodes broadcast at 4-week intervals, ending on October 18, 1942. The series was written by novelist and dramatist Dorothy L. Sayers, and produced by Val Gielgud, with Robert Speaight as Jesus.’ – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Born_to_be_King

Lewis I know, McGrath and Guiness but who is Dorothy Sayers? I blush. –

‘Dorothy Leigh Sayers (usually pronounced /ˈseɪ.ərz/, although Sayers herself preferred [ˈsɛːz] and encouraged the use of her middle initial to facilitate this pronunciation;[ Barbara Reynolds (1993). Dorothy L. Sayers: Her Life and Soul. London: Hodder & Stoughton. p. 361. ISBN 0312097875.] Oxford, 13 June 1893 – Witham, 17 December 1957) was a renowned English crime writer, poet, playwright, essayist, translator and Christian humanist. She was also a student of classical and modern languages. She is best known for her mysteries, a series of novels and short stories set between World War I and World War II that feature English aristocrat and amateur sleuth Lord Peter Wimsey. However, Sayers herself considered her translation of Dante’s Divina Commedia to be her best work. She is also known for her plays and essays.’ – W.O.E

– Well, seeing as poetry is my ding, I thought I’d begin with a series of poems from LibriVox – Included are: JRR Tolkien, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell, Dorothy L Sayers, CS Lewis, William Faulkner, Kahlil Gibran, DH Lawrence, Robert Graves and Ernest Hemingway. – http://librivox.org/librivoxs-most-wanted-poetry-collection-by-various/

There was a movie made of Haunted Honeymoon by Dorothy Leigh Sayers, but this is not the one. It’s actually written by Gene Wilder & Terence Marsh. I’m in the mood for a movie, so see you on the other side – (in eight parts) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrfXUphC6oA&list=PL6651CB375531D9E3&feature=plpp_play_all

‘The movie was a financial flop only grossing $8,000,000 in America entering the box office at number 8, then slipping to 14 the following week. While Gilda Radner was struggling with cancer, she wrote the following about the film in her book It’s Always Something: “On July 26, [1986] Haunted Honeymoon opened nationwide. It was a bomb. One month of publicity and the movie was only in the theaters for a week — a box-office disaster.”[Radner, Gilda. It's Always Something. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1989. p. 56]
Like many other theater “flops”, however, it has grown a sizeable fan following due to home video.’ W.O.E – SHHHHHHHH!! I’m watching!!!!

I couldn’t find the whole movie version of Dorothy’s book, but here’s a taste of it : I couldn’t find the whole movie, but here’s a taster : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eoNOibJYy10 — > It seems that Dorothy’s stories were gobbled up by BBC too —> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Peter_Wimsey

‎’The 1940 film The Haunted Honeymoon (US title) or Busman’s Honeymoon (UK title), starring Robert Montgomery and Constance Cummings as Lord and Lady Peter, is available on videotape in generic boxes on the secondary market. Any resemblance of its characters and events to those in Busman’s Honeymoon is more than coincidental but less than satisfactory to Sayers’s fans; the film script simplifies the novel’s plot a great deal. (In the TV adaptation of Murder Must Advertise, a movie poster of Robert Montgomery is prominently visible on the wall in the secretaries’ office). Sayers refused even to see this movie.’

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_Peter_Wimsey ‘Busman’s Honeymoon is a 1937 novel by Dorothy L. Sayers, her eleventh (and last) featuring Lord Peter Wimsey. It is the fourth and last novel to feature Harriet Vane.’ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Busman%27s_Honeymoon
